BRT conducted a Feasibility Study in May of 2008. This study showed that the site was lacking three vital components for biological remediation: oxygen, nutrients, and bacteria. Utilizing BRT’s site-specific approach, all three of these components were addressed over a 6-month remediation period. Focusing on the bacteria, BRT personnel developed an indigenous contaminant degrading bacterial culture to create an inoculum of 1,000 gallons. This one-time event, also referred to as a biological seeding, occurred during the month of January 2009. To address the oxygen issue, BRT used the proprietary Biological Oxygen Supply System (BOSS) developed exclusively by BRT. Over the course of the remediation period, 15 mobile injections were performed. Utilizing the mobile BOSS led to very little site disturbance and required no new infrastructure. During these oxygen events, nutrients designed specifically for the indigenous contaminant degrading bacteria were injected in conjunction with BOSS events. By determining what the site needs were upfront and addressing them, a legacy contaminated site was characterized and biologically remediated in a very short time with minimal costs.
